this is still a fight between how much spending cuts and how much taxes. the president got his -- >> well, simpson-bowles said let's get rid of the high tax rates. the president doesn't seem to be in favor of that mpt you had $1 trillion in tax increases with obama care. he just got new tax increases at the beginning of this month. and now they are calling for even more tax increases, and they are not calling to cut spending. they are calling for spending increases. so basically what they're saying is, they want americans to pay more so washington can spend more. that's not going to help the economy, and that is not going to close the gap and balance the budget. the reason we want to balance the budget is not to make the numbers add up. we think that's necessary for growth and opportunity. we think it's necessary to make sure that our kids don't get this debt that they won't be able to handle if we keep going down the path we are on. >> but there are certainly those in the white house who would take issue with what you said or might even say to use your own criticism that's a straw man ar

austerity or the taxes are used to bail out governments on the other side of the continent. we are starting to see this in the demonstrations on the streets of athens, magid and world. we're starting to see it in the parliaments of berlin, helsinki and the hague. and yes, of course, we are seeing this frustration with the eu very dramatically here in the united kingdom. europe's leaders have a duty to hear these concerns. indeed, we have a duty to act on them. and not just to fix the problems in the eurozone. for just as in any emergency you should plan for the aftermath as well as dealing with the present crisis, so, too, in the midst of the present challenges we should plan for the future, and what the world will look like when the difficulties and the eurozone have been overcome. now, the biggest danger to the european union comes not from those who advocate change, but from those who denounce new thinking as heresy. in its long history europe has experience of heretics who turned out to have a point. and my point is this. more the same on the secure a long-term future for the eurozone.

about. the obama administration has sort of taken this tactic in the past, during the payroll tax cut fight, during the student loan fight, really circumventing congress and trying to build a ground swell of support among the people, to pressure congress to get what it wants to get done passed. so in this case, that is the stiffer gun law. so you're going to see vice president biden out today, holding that roundtable, talking about gun legislation. he'll be joined by his cabinet secretaries as well as a democratic senator, tim kaine, to really try to talk to the people about why he thinks this for gun legislation is a good idea. but, of course, as you just mapped out, there is a lot of opposition to this, particularly in states like virginia. so they're hoping to get moderates on their side, so that when this really does go to a fight, they will have the votes in the end. senior administration officials tell me, privately, they think that there is a lot of support for universal background checks and for limiting high-capacity magazines, but, of course, that ban on assault weapons is r
